ACANTHAMOEBA KERATITIS

PARASITIC KERATITIS 

A Parasite is an organism that lives off another organism, for example, Acanthamoeba; this organism is usually in water bodies, soil, hearing, ventilating, and air conditioner units.

Keratitis caused by a parasite is called Acanthamoeba keratitis.

WHAT IS ACANTHAMOEBA KERATITIS?

Acanthamoeba keratitis is a rare infection that occurs when Acanthamoeba organisms from contaminated water or contact lens solutions enter the eye through tiny scrapes caused by contact lens wear or other minor injuries to the eye, the parasite Acanthamoeba is one-celled and surprisingly very common in nature; when it infects the cornea (outer transparent layer of the eyes), it results in an eye infection that can cause vision loss or blindness if left untreated.

 

SYMPTOMS OF ACANTHAMOEBA KERATITIS

  • Sensation of something in the eye
  • Eye pain and redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light (Photophobia)
  • Excessive tearing

Acanthamoeba keratitis can develop in anyone who gets in contact with contaminated water; contact lens wearers are more prone to this infection as certain practices increase the risk of infection. They may include:
