CHEMOSIS: AN OVERVIEW OF THE EYE CONDITION

CHEMOSIS

Have you ever experienced a sudden and mysterious swelling of the eye, accompanied by redness, itchiness, and blurred vision?

Interestingly, there is a condition that causes swollen eyes and is called CHEMOSIS. Chemosis, a condition characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva,  it can be a frustrating and uncomfortable  to experience it. But what causes this pesky eye problem, and more importantly, how can it be eliminated? Let’s take a more elaborate look at this condition below and explore its causes, symptoms, and treatments.

WHAT IS CHEMOSIS?

Chemosis is an eye condition that occurs when the conjunctiva (the transparent tissue that lines the inside of your eyelids and the surface of your eyes) becomes swollen and irritated.  The conjunctiva acts as the outermost protective layer for the remaining surface of  the eye and covers the inner surface of the eyelids because the corneas protect the black part of the eyes (pupils and irises).

Therefore chemosis cause the eyelid to appear swollen or puffy, when it affects the conjunctiva lining the eyeball. However, smaller patches of Chemosis on the sclera (the whitish outermost layers of the eyeballs) may look like a blister covering the white part of the eye, often with a slight yellowish hue, or it could look like fluids trapped under the surface. Generally, Chemosis can be difficult to detect unless inspected closely.   In severe cases, a person may struggle to close their eyes completely.

The good news is that although chemosis may appear to take a while to clear up, it is generally straightforward to treat and not as easily transmitted as some other eye conditions. Additionally, the most effective approach is to prevent it. By understanding the underlying causes of chemosis, you might be able to prevent recurring instances.
