INTRODUCTION TO FOLLICULAR CONJUNCTIVITIS

Follicular conjunctivitis is a prevalent eye condition defined by the inflammation of the conjunctiva, the delicate membrane that covers the white part of the eye. This condition is frequently associated with developing follicles, which are small, rounded bumps on the conjunctiva.

WHAT IS FOLLICULAR CONJUNCTIVITIS?

Follicular conjunctivitis is a specific form of conjunctivitis that arises when the conjunctiva becomes inflamed, resulting in the formation of follicles (rash-like elevations). These follicles comprise a cluster of immune cells known as lymphocytes that gather in response to an infection or irritation. Additionally, these rash-like bumps are more prominent on the lower eyelid than the upper eyelid, appearing as rounded, grayish-white swellings.

Follicular conjunctivitis can be either acute or chronic and could be triggered by exposure to environmental allergens (such as pollen, dust, smoke, grass, and weather). It leads to a sensation of something being lodged in the eyes, discomfort, and redness, often accompanied by itching and eye discharge.
